Famine in the Horn of Africa
Sahan Relief in collaboration with Human Concern International and Somali Relief Ottawa has been providing relief and humanitarian projects in the famine affected regions in Somalia. Sahan Relief calls for help for the drought and famine crises in the Horn of Africa-the worst in 60 years. After seasons of failed rains hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to abandon their homes in search of food and shelter.
The situation in Somalia is deteriorating; the UN warns that almost all regions of the south could face famine. It has been reported from the famine affected regions that rates of malnutrition and mortality are increasing, and communicable diseases continue to spread.
According to the latest report by the Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit (FSNAU), 4 million people are currently in crisis nationwide, up from 3.7 million reported in August. Out of these 4 million, 3 million are in the south of Somalia. FSNAU has warned that 750,000 people risk death in the coming four months if efforts to respond to the famine are not scaled up.
